‘Twist’ of Fate: Shortlisted for the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize

‘Twist’ Acrylic on canvas portrait of a yellow tailed black cockatoo

I'm thrilled to share some incredible news with you all – my painting 'Twist,' a portrait of a yellow-tailed black cockatoo in acrylic on canvas, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize 2024. It's a momentous occasion for me, and I'm eager to recount the journey that led me here.

For years, I've been enamored with the Waterhouse Art Prize exhibition at the South Australian Museum. The diverse array of artworks, each telling a unique story about the natural world, always left me in awe. However, despite my admiration, I never considered entering the competition – that is until I crossed paths with Justine van Mourik, the Deputy Director of Engagement at the South Australian Museum.

During my participation in the Vaulting Ambitions program, an accelerator aimed at empowering artists to succeed in their creative businesses, I had the opportunity to showcase some of my paintings. Justine's encouragement and belief in my work ignited a newfound confidence within me. I decided to take a leap of faith and submit my artwork to the Waterhouse Art Prize.

While the first year I entered didn't yield success, I remained steadfast in my commitment to honing my craft. This perseverance bore fruit when, to my utter disbelief, I received the news of my painting being shortlisted for the emerging category of the Waterhouse Art Prize.

The sheer exhilaration of this achievement is beyond words. To be recognised among such esteemed artists is a humbling experience, and I feel immensely grateful for the opportunity to share my artwork with a wider audience. As I prepare for the upcoming exhibition, I'm filled with anticipation and excitement, knowing that my painting will be admired by not just art enthusiasts, but by the general public as well.

The journey from Vaulting Ambitions to Waterhouse recognition has been nothing short of transformative. It's a testament to the power of encouragement and perseverance. I can't wait to see where this newfound momentum takes me, and I invite you all to join me on this exhilarating journey.
