Honoured by Nature: Shortlisted for the Solar Art Prize

‘Get A Grip’ Acrylic on Panel

I'm thrilled to share some exciting news with you all – my painting 'Get A Grip,' a life-like acrylic portrait of a female red-tailed black cockatoo, has been shortlisted for the 15th Annual Solar Art Prize. This esteemed South Australian competition, dedicated to celebrating nature and the environment while advocating for carbon emission reduction, holds a special place in my heart.

The Solar Art Prize, with prizes totalling $60,000 in solar products, is a beacon of recognition for artists who channel their creativity towards environmental stewardship. Judged by three independent panels annually, this merit-based competition welcomes artists of all mediums to contribute their unique perspectives on our planet's natural beauty and challenges.

Proudly founded and sponsored by Adelaide philanthropist Pip Fletcher, alongside the generous support of Natural Technology Systems, the Solar Art Prize is a testament to the power of art in driving positive change. Hosted by the Royal South Australian Society for Arts, the exhibition promises to be a captivating showcase of artistic talent and environmental advocacy.

My entry, 'Get A Grip,' pays homage to the endangered red-tailed black cockatoo, symbolising the delicate balance between humanity and nature amidst the looming threat of climate change. Through meticulous detail and a poignant backdrop created from linocut prints of the bird's tail feathers, the painting beckons viewers to reflect on the urgency of conservation efforts in preserving Australia's precious wildlife.

As I reflect on this incredible honor, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful cause. Being shortlisted for the Solar Art Prize is not only a recognition of artistic merit but also a call to action to protect our planet and its inhabitants.

This recognition comes on the heels of the news of my other painting, 'Twist,' being shortlisted for the Waterhouse Art Prize, adding to the sense of pride and accomplishment in my artistic journey. Having previously won my section of the Solar Art Prize two years ago, this nomination is a testament to the continued evolution of my craft and dedication to environmental advocacy through art.

I'm immensely grateful for this opportunity to share my passion for nature and conservation through art, and I look forward to experiencing the exhibition alongside fellow artists and art enthusiasts.
