About the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize
The theme for this year’s prize is Inspire, encouraging artists to capture the essence of the Park Lands and evoke inspiration in viewers. For me, the grey-headed flying fox colony that has taken root in Adelaide since 2011 is a perfect embodiment of this theme. Once nomadic, these remarkable creatures have found a permanent home in the Park Lands, filling the evening sky with a breathtaking display of movement and life. Their presence speaks to resilience, adaptation, and the delicate balance of urban and natural ecosystems.
The Story Behind Cradle in the Canopy
Cradle in the Canopy is a highly detailed acrylic painting capturing an intimate moment between a mother grey-headed flying fox and her baby. The mother wraps her wings protectively around her young, embodying care and connection. Through this piece, I hope to highlight the crucial role these flying foxes play in our environment as pollinators and seed dispersers while also inviting viewers to appreciate their beauty and significance.
Being named a finalist is particularly meaningful to me because I have entered this competition in previous years without success. Having my work recognized this time around is an incredible honor and a reminder of the importance of perseverance.
